About Real Gustavian Swedish Antiques
Real Gustavian specializes in the purchase and import of authentic
Swedish antiques, 18th century furniture and decorative arts. Company
founder, Lani Sternerup has a degree in classical studies and art
history from the University of Lund in Sweden. She has just completed
the translation of the first scholarly publication on classical Swedish
architecture and interiors
that
was published by WW Norton. Sternerup is also co-founder and director of Classical Excursions, a
specialty tour company featuring architectural tours and decorative arts
study tours in Europe and Scandinavia. She annually leads successful
Architecural tours exploring
a variety of Sweden’s finest homes, manor houses and palaces called
18th Century Sweden: The Golden Age of Gustavian Style,
that attracts many architects and designers. Sternerup’s expertise and
knowledge of Swedish antiques from the 18th, century
has led to various interviews and features with leading magazines such
as Art & Auction, the former Victoria Magazine, Antiques Weekly and
Four Seasons magazine.
Upon her return to the states, Sternerup was amazed by the amount of space devoted to 18th century Swedish antiques, interiors and architecture in design magazines. She also discovered that many shops specializing in Gustavian furniture were marketing late 19th and early 20th century furniture as “Gustavian.” Sternerup’s mission is to bring real, high quality, Gustavian furniture, produced in late 18th century and early 19th century to her clients. Her philosophy is " I don't buy anything that I wouldn't be content keeping myself".
Sternerup travels frequently to Sweden, hand-selecting antique furniture of only the highest quality. She never buys anything that she wouldn’t be content keeping herself. Please visit the new boutique located on Stockbridge Road in Great Barrington. The shop features Swedish textiles including a historically reproduced line based on original 18th century Swedish fabrics, tableware by Rorstrand ( Sweden's oldest porcelain factory, and Europe's second oldest), hand dipped dripless taper candles, Swedish children's books by renowned author Elsa Beskov and more.
A new landmark book on Swedish architecture and design entitled, Classical Swedish Architecture & Interiors by Johan Cederlund and translated by Lani Sternerup of Real Gustavian. Available through WW Norton in the fall of 2006.
