July 1st the main run of Sockeye arrived on the Alagnak river
a little late but after the arrival there was a excellent run
of Sockeye Salmon in the river to be caught. Landing Sockeye
ranging between 6 lbs and 10 lbs was pretty regular with the
average weight being 8 lbs. Small green marabou flies were extremely
effective catching all sizes of Sockeye.
The rainbow fishing was exceptional in June,
landing rainbows 20 inches long was average with some exceptional
fish coming in at a whopping 28 inches with the main Sockeye
run in full cycle the rainbow fishing has dropped off. Even
though the rainbows thinned out we still are landing numerous
big rainbows on elk hair caddis, mice, leech and smolt patterns.
The rainbow fishing will improve as the chums, kings and pinks
begin to spawn.
Chums - Pinks and Kings
The Chums, Pinks and Kings are just beginning
to arrive 2 days ago (July 22) in the lower river. Guides Captain
Pat and Captain Don and four guests had a nice day in the lower
river yesterday (July 23) ripping 45 chums from the water. Over
the next few weeks the chum and pink fishing will only improve
but the 45 taken the day before was a nice start.
Dolly Varden and Grayling
Dolly Varden have reached several
of their holding areas in the upper Alagnak river. They have
just started to take on there spawning colors. These are truly
beautiful Char with their bright pink dots on their side. Beads
and small streamer patterns have been very effective in landing
all sizes of Dolly Varden.
The Grayling fishing been outstanding
with the fish running larger than usual. Grayling love to come
after surface flies therefore providing great dry fly action.
Everyone should take some time to enjoy this wonderful fish.
