This
Alaska fly out fishing lodge information below was gathered during
21 years of flying and guiding in remote Alaska and is our sole
opinion based on facts and personnel observations as to the best
value in alaska fly out fishing. Many of the top fly-out lodges are
fancier and bigger and have prettier web sites but we will put our
fly in fishing program against any of them. Our fly-out fishing page
is for educating a 1st timer to Alaska what options you have vs. Alaska
Adventures. All The the lodges that are listed are the top lodges in
the area and have been in business for a long time and are nice fly
out
fishing lodges. We are showing the hidden facts that sometimes get
left out of the fancy brochures and sales pitches. We want all
people to be able to make an educated decision on where to book
there Alaska fishing lodge trip and why to choose Alaska Trophy
Adventures lodge over the competition.
Top 10 reasons not to go to a fly-Out only
fishing lodge
1.$$ Money the truth is the Top fly-out
lodges in Alaska charge $6,000-7,600 per week per guest to much for
the fishing the reason is simple Airplanes cost allot.
2. The fishing ? Not the Best wilderness
Fishing in Alaska ! what do you really get for your money some fancy
food prepared by chefs, the best lodges corporate money can buy, and
flying in crappy weather day after day looking for some place to
land that does not have 4-8 airplanes already there.
3.Quality of fishing experience!
there are around 20 top fly out fishing lodges located around
Bristol bay Alaska and 10-12 of them are competing for the same
water each day on small fly out rivers.
4. Safety! the truth is that each summer
there are 2-3 fly out fishing lodges crashing airplanes with injuries
and fatalities in the Bristol bay area! Main Cause is pilot error
because they are being pushed past there limits to find uncrowded
good fishing and they fight inherent bad weather conditions
including-fog-rain-high winds and icing conditions on a daily basis
with many of them being overloaded.
5. Bad Weather days No flying days! at
$1200 a day it sucks to hang out at the lodge and play cards all day
and if your lucky enough to get out in the afternoon after the fog
lifts there are already 4-6 other lodges were you wanted to fish so
you get stuck with scraps and over fished water. Most of the good
fly-out lodges have some type of home water to fish although most of
them are competing with 2-3 other lodges on there home water. Also
there guides are not current on it as they have been flying out each
day to a different location.
6.The truth about the fly fishing? the
salmon and trout fishing changes weekly on the dozen or so river
drainages in the Bristol bay area some weeks great! some weeks
marginal and some sucky. The main problem with the top fly out lodges
is they all fish a dozen rivers within a 100 mile radius, and they
truly are competing for a spot to land and tie up on many of the
rivers and small lakes for example this past summer one July day we
took a group flight seeing in Katmai park over near morraine creek
and battle creek when we flew over moraine there were 7 airplanes
and 2 float trips all fishing a 2 mile stretch of river. along with
an 10 person Otter unloading 10 bear photography tourist that just
flew out from Anchorage. This was a complete circus and if I would
of been paying $1000 a day for fly out fishing from one of the top
lodges I would of been furious. Although to be
fair I did talk to some of the anglers at the airport in King
salmon the following week and they told me most of them did catch 3
or 4 28-30 inch trout each that day.
Wow what a great
wilderness experience!
7. Private Access to the fly out rivers
this is a boldface lie -there are only a couple of private rivers to
fish that the local natives have the rights to lease access and boat
storage, although every
lodge has access to American Creek~Talarik Creek,~Morraine Creek~
Kulik River ~Brookes River ~Kvichak River ~Copper River ~ Battle
Creek ~ Funnel Creek ~ Contact Creek ~Heavenly Creek ~ Egegik River
~Becharof lake Outlet ~Outlet of Nonvianuk Lake, Outlet Kukaklek
lake~ lower Alagnak River~ Agulawak river ~Agulapak River ~King
Salmon River~ Nushagak river ~ Naknek River.
8. It is true these are the best rivers in
all of Bristol bay for trout and Salmon but they are all getting
crowded by more fly-out lodges moving into the area more mobile tent
camps are setting up at the access points and more float trips
fishing the prime water with easy floatplane access.
9.FishingValue
Dollar for dollar Not a very good value if your looking at the
overall wilderness experience, quality private fishing and peaceful
calm experience. Crowds-Noisy Airplanes-Stress hurry-up and
wait to load floatplanes to fly out to a crowded river hurry up load
planes to get back to the lodge not to miss hour devoirs and
cocktail
hour. Amount of fishing time and catching fish vs 5-6 guest's packed
in a plane with 1 pilot and 1 guide to take care of them for the
day.
10. Lodge locations, many of the so
called top fly out lodges have the worst locations on the most
crowded fishing rivers that's why they have to fly-out. You ask why
would a multimillion dollar lodge be put where the fishing is
marginal its very simple. Convenience and cost of doing business its
cheaper to operate near a town with road access and its cheaper to
barge fuel and supplies to a lodge located on a tidal estuary in a
lower river, but what do they loose everything that makes most
peoples trip to Alaska a great trip
